Why should I learn my Enneagram type with a coach?

Relying on tests is not the best way to find out your type! They are based on algorithms and while they can narrow down the results, it cannot measure your internal world — the purpose of the Enneagram. Many mistypes happen this way (that happened to me! MORE THAN A FEW TIMES!). Online tests shine a light on part of the story, but it will tell you nothing about YOUR story. A coach helps you make it yours.
Other things you get from an online test:

Did you know that diagnoses like obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, ADHD, and more can actually make people look like specific enneagram types because of external behaviors? Do you some cultures have the “vibe” or “values” of certain enneagram types?
We don’t type on behaviors, but we don’t self-type either because… it’s too tricky. Someone who isn’t living in your world needs to cut through the noise and ask the right questions — whether there is an underlying issue, a type-look-alike, or a possibly mistype because of a nuanced biological instinctual variant — self typing is not the vibe.

NO PREP NEEDED! No, it’s not too good to be true! Please do not take an online test if you haven’t already. You can read up if you’d like but it’s not necessary. I’d recommend coming open and empty and reading up later.
All you need to do to prepare is understand what your goal is: what do you want to accomplish in our time together?
You can also prepare by preparing your space: a quiet, comfortable place to sit and talk, a pair of headphones, comfortable clothes, etc. Prep yourself for comfort and openness.

Free, online tests are only one small part of THE story… but that doesn’t mean it tells us anything about YOUR story. Tests and one-size-fits all online explanations have their own purposes, but they come second to working with a coach. Value and cost are two different things. While the cost of an online test may be free, working with a coach for your typing session is invaluable to your longterm growth.

While it is possible for coaches to mistype someone, that has not happened in my experience as a coach. I solely attribute this to making my clients part of the process and not relying on an online test to measure the person in front of me. Hand in hand, we can nail it down together. No doubt about it.
